I always like to surprise my students with new challenges to avoid falling into the trap of working in their comfort zone where they select their favourite material and containers. I believe one should constantly expand their knowledge of the technical skills learnt in Sogetsu Ikebana classes and everyday life
Today’s challenge was creating a branch structure to accompany floral material in an arrangement. With looks of surprise and slight in-trepidation the students set about learning how to use a large saw and power drill. Once holes drilled the units were attached together with doweling pegs, all sounds relatively easy until you start attaching many branch sections. I feel Sogetsu Ikebana has an additional hidden element – problem solving, which can be overcome with sound technical skills. With renewed confidence there was no stopping my students creating great structures plus secretly wishing to add a power drill to their tool kit.
