Study of Variation #7 - Fruit and vegetables

Sandy Marker

In the study of Sogetsu curriculum one of the pattern lesson is Variation #7. This variation is divided into three sections Spreading, Floating and Morimono arrangements.

Morimono arrangements are constructed using fruit, vegetables, nuts, roots or any plant material. I often consider this arrangement can be challenging especially to avoid making it look kitschy/crafty or tacky. To avoid your arrangement looking like a fruit platter or vegetable basket view your material through different eyes and don’t see it as fruit or vegetable. View your material as you would with any material for a Sogetsu arrangement – see the colour, texture, volume etc as you would with branches or flowers. One point that needs care is fruit/ vegetables can be extremely heavy looking. Give the arrangement life and elevation plus an element of surprise.

You will never look at fruit and vegetables in quite the same way
